Program Overview

Real Talk: Substance Use & Risk Behavior Prevention is an honest, nonjudgmental educational program designed to help individuals understand the factors that influence substance use and risky behavior while building practical skills for healthier decision-making.

Rather than relying on scare tactics or lectures, Real Talk focuses on meaningful conversations about why people make certain choices, how stress and emotions influence behavior, the difference between coping and escaping, and how today's decisions can affect future health, relationships, goals, and opportunities.

Through interactive discussions, real-life examples, reflection activities, and practical skill-building, participants explore healthy coping strategies, emotional regulation, personal responsibility, social influence, values, and decision-making. The goal is not to shame people for past or present choices, but to provide information and tools that encourage awareness, accountability, and positive change.

Real Talk can be adapted for schools, colleges, businesses, recovery organizations, reentry programs, community groups, treatment settings, workforce development programs, prevention coalitions, and other organizations. Whether someone is learning about prevention for the first time, rebuilding after addiction, or simply working to make healthier choices, the program provides practical education that can be applied to everyday life.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand common reasons people turn to substances or risky behaviors.
  • Recognize how stress, emotions, trauma, environment, and social influence can affect choices.

  • Identify short- and long-term consequences of substance use and risky decisions.
  • Develop healthier coping strategies.
  • Strengthen emotional regulation.
  • Improve decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Recognize peer, social, and environmental influences.
  • Build personal accountability without shame.
  • Connect choices with personal values and future goals.
  • Identify supportive resources when additional help is needed.
  • Build resilience and confidence in making healthier choices.

Duration & Delivery Options

That's why Real Talk can be customized based on participant age, experience, program goals, available time, and learning objectives. Whether you're looking for a brief prevention presentation, an interactive workshop, or a multi-week educational series, we'll work with you to create an experience that is relevant, practical, and engaging.

One-Hour Presentation

Perfect for schools, colleges, workplaces, community events, prevention programs, recovery organizations, and awareness initiatives. This presentation introduces substance use, risky behaviors, social influences, healthy coping, decision-making, and the importance of understanding the "why" behind our choices.

A more interactive experience that gives participants time to explore substance use, emotional regulation, coping strategies, personal values, social influence, and real-life consequences through discussion, scenarios, reflection, and practical exercises.

Why This Program Matters

Substance use and risky behavior are rarely as simple as someone "making a bad choice." Stress, trauma, peer pressure, environment, mental health, curiosity, relationships, social expectations, and a lack of healthy coping skills can all influence behavior.

Real Talk was created to move beyond judgment and focus on understanding.

When individuals understand why certain behaviors happen, they are better equipped to recognize patterns, consider consequences, develop healthier coping strategies, and make informed decisions moving forward.

The program encourages open conversation without glamorizing or minimizing the risks associated with substance use. Participants are given practical information, opportunities for reflection, and tools they can use in real-world situations.

Real Talk also recognizes that people may enter the program from very different places. Some participants may have never used substances. Others may be in recovery, returning from incarceration, supporting someone they love, or trying to change patterns that are no longer serving them.

The message remains the same:

Your past choices can teach you, but they do not have to control your future choices.

Topics Covered

Real Talk provides practical, judgment-free education that helps participants better understand substance use, risky behavior, coping, and decision-making while developing skills that support healthier futures.

Understanding the "Why"

Explore the different reasons people may turn to substances or risky behaviors, including stress, trauma, curiosity, social pressure, emotional pain, environment, and the desire to escape.

Substance Use & Risk Behaviors

Participants learn about the potential effects of substance use and risky decisions on health, relationships, employment, education, finances, and future opportunities.

Coping vs. Escaping

Learn how to recognize the difference between healthy coping strategies and behaviors that temporarily avoid or numb difficult emotions without addressing the underlying problem.

Emotional Regulation

Participants develop practical strategies for identifying emotions, managing stress, pausing before reacting, and responding more intentionally during difficult situations.

Peer & Social Influence

Explore how friends, family, relationships, social media, workplace culture, and community environments can influence personal choices.

Healthy Decision-Making

Strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills by considering risks, consequences, personal values, and long-term goals before making decisions.

Personal Responsibility Without Shame

Participants learn that accountability and self-compassion can coexist. Past mistakes can become opportunities for learning, growth, and healthier future choices.

Values & Future Goals

Explore how everyday choices connect to relationships, career goals, recovery, family, health, and the kind of future participants want to create.

Recovery & Resilience

Participants learn that setbacks do not erase progress and that recovery, growth, and positive change are possible with support, accountability, and continued effort.
